Get Accurate Information For Your Pets
Like dogs, cats may need regular ear cleanings to keep them hearing well and avoid infections. With that being said, cats are very clean animals and regularly groom themselves, so they may not need it as often as other animals.
You don’t want to clean ears too often, which can lead to irritation and infection. Only clean your cat’s ears if you notice a large buildup.
The Tools You Use Matter
Cotton balls or soft gauze are excellent to clean ears with. They are very gentle and aren’t irritating. Simply wipe away any debris around your cat’s ear. When choosing a cleaner, it may be worth it to ask your vet for their recommendation. Be sure to pick one that is non-toxic! Most vet hospitals sell ear-cleaning solutions that you can buy. Some kitties do much better if they are swaddled in a towel.
1. Find a position that is comfortable for you and your cat. You may choose to swaddle your cat to keep her from scratching you.
2. Make sure that your pet is in a good mood and isn’t anxious or upset.
3. Pull the ear flap back.
4. Squeeze the ear-cleaning solution into the ear canal. Be sure to avoid putting the tip directly into the ear.
5. Massage the base of the ear to ensure that the solution is dispersed.
6. Use your cotton or gauze to gently wipe away debris. Don’t stuff a cotton ball down into the ear. This could cause you to unknowingly push debris and discharge deeper.
7. Use dry cotton or gauze to dry the ear.
